Biography
NEIL SCHAFER

My name is Neil Schafer and I live in northern California. I am currently enrolled in the DDGT A.S. Degree program as well as enrolled in the Welding and Machine Tool programs. I am pursuing an B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering. The goal for completing all of these programs is to be able to build a drift truck and curate my own company for building the ultimate driving machine for drifting and speed, the truck is modeled in my technical projects page.

I was first exposed to Autodesk software in high school and used it to create a number of things, the first of which was a lightsaber modeled from the video game Star Wars - the Old Republic. From that rough starting point I have flourished in the DDGT program at Napa Valley College, creating many highly technical drawings and parts to further my understanding of the complexities in all the Autodesk software has to offer. I have a strong passion for conceptualizing an idea and making a technical model to explore the concept further. From the other programs that I am currently enrolled in, I am learning not only the design but the actual process necessary to make the final project. Thus the moto, “design, engineering, fabrication, application.” My future plans are to continue to explore and learn all that I can in all software and hardware that I can get my hands on. Building the model 1990 Toyota pickup truck 2WD in to a 1JZ swapped drift missile that is in my digital design page.

My Previous experience with vehicles goes all the way back to my first car which was a 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX wagon. I managed to completely remove the trunk and fit in a redwood stained trunk floor that I mounted a 5-gallon air tank and dual 444cc compressors to fill it, and a Accuair height sensor management and block to control the air to each bag over strut combo. The fronts were double bellow and the rear were sleeved bags. After changing every part of the suspension from the control arms to the rear trailing arms to get the AWD Subaru suspension to sit with the wheels’ flush with the fender just a centimeter off the ground. I moved onto changing the entire interior to suede wrap and putting a few engine bolt-ons, after which it road like a cloud. Eventually, I was able to put a new clutch, lightened flywheel, new heads and all new gaskets in the long block for a complete refresh. Unfortunately, I had to sell the vehicle.

On March 3rd 2016, I lost my father to brain cancer and I haven’t stopped working to make him proud since. Over the course of about a year I helped take care of my family and helped care for my dad as his mental fortitude and body betrayed him. I believe I have become only stronger from the trying experience. Through this tragedy, I have come to the revelation of time and the pursuit of happiness. Now I not only focus on the future, but I can honestly say that I put my absolute best effort in to everything I put my mind to.
