Plumb Bob
(Engine Lathe)

The plumb bob project focused on precision machining and geometric accuracy. A plumb bob is a simple but essential tool used to establish a true vertical reference line, making both symmetry and dimensional accuracy critical to its function.

This part was machined from 12L14 hex stock on an engine lathe and required careful attention to tolerances throughout the entire process. I used a combination of turning and finishing operations to develop the final form, including facing, tapering, and refining the overall profile. Consistent measurement checks were essential to ensure accuracy and maintain control over the final dimensions.

One of the main challenges in this project was achieving a clean, centered point while maintaining balance across the part. Even small deviations in alignment could affect how the plumb bob hangs and performs in use. Careful setup, deliberate tool control, and incremental machining steps were necessary to achieve a stable and accurate result.

Overall, this project strengthened my understanding of precision machining practices, tool control, and the importance of symmetry and balance in functional design. Feel free to click on the images for a better view.
