This project utilised Autodesk Inventor's Sheet Metal and Flat Pattern tools, which has you start with a flat face, adding bends and additional features bit by bit. Then, you can "flatten" the part and make changes to the flat pattern which affect the final 3D part. I found it to be rather interesting, I would like to play around with this tool some more.
